Brought back by popular demand, this session is specifically designed for experienced directors. It includes a full day
of special programming with lunch and an afternoon reception in the exhibit hall. Dinner will also be provided in the
exhibit hall and directors are encouraged to stay. Program will include:
1. Morning Session – “Messages That Make a Difference”
Does your message really tell your story? Changing the way we think and operate our organizations will
often help us better tell our story, whether for fund raising efforts or selling the camp experience. Join entrepreneur and
fundraising guru Tom Suddes in a dynamic discussion about messages that make a difference.
2. Lunch with Chris Thurber – “The Stamina to Lead”
“Prevent burnout.” What are you, a rocket? It’s time to stop thinking about avoiding catastrophe – for yourself or your staff – and
instead focus on ways to thoughtfully design your schedule, leadership team, and management style. A new ecological framework,
plus wisdom from your peers, will help experienced directors create spheres of influence that contribute to their energy and goals.
3. Afternoon Session –
“The Things That Keep Us Up at Night: Hot Topics and Trends”
Join Peg Smith and experts in the fields of marketing, public policy, insurance, research and professional development as we
discuss the hot topics that are impacting our ability to make a difference.
Take the DiSC – Build Connections
That Make A Difference!
Faith Evans, Wednesday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $75/person
The foundation of personal and professional success lies in
understanding self, understanding others and realizing the impact of
personal behavior on the people around you. Take the DiSC Profile
Preview Assessment, a learning instrument that provides a nonjudgmental
language to explore behavior, discover your strengths,
and value the strengths of others. Learn to improve communication
skills, foster teamwork, and reduce conflict and stress. Participate in
experiential exercises to highlight and integrate your learning, and
have some fun!
Exploring Leadership Actively
Jim Cain, Wednesday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $75/person
Join author and teambuilding guru, Jim Cain, for a full-day session in
exploring leadership. Perfect your CIT and advanced camper
programs. This session will utilize the curriculum developed with Coca-
Cola to help youth actively explore 16 facets of leadership.
New Director Orientation
Wednesday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm $65/ACA Member
$75/Non-member
A special eight-hour session for seasonal or new camp directors,
assistant directors, program directors or persons that have been in
other administrative positions who are considering directing camp. This
is an overview of all the aspects of the director’s job with the primary
focus on summer operation. It is an interactive session that includes risk
management, camper behavior and staff training and supervision.
Standards Course
Wednesday 9:00 am – 1:00 pm FREE
This is a basic course for persons new to standards that cover the
accreditation process and an overview of the new ACA standards.
This course is a requirement for standards visits with new camps or
directors and is expected to assist the camp in preparing for that visit.
Standards Update Course
Wednesday 9:00 am – 1:00 pm FREE
This course is designed for the person experienced in guiding a camp
through the accreditation process. It is an orientation to the revised
ACA standards and is a requirement for an experienced camp
director before going through a visit. This course is also the first part
of the visitor update course.
All About Ropes Course Certification
Mike Anderson, Kennerly de Forest,
Wednesday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm $35/person
A session designed to help camp staff and managers understand the
ropes course certification process. Discuss skills assessments. Proctor
sample written and practical tests. Review practitioner resumes.
Examine the difference between certification and training. Explore the
challenges in different options available to camps that will help you
decide your best path. This is NOT a certification course.
We Squashed It! Problem Solving and
Conflict Management
Scott Arizala, Thursday 2:00 pm – 5:15 pm $35/person
Learn to effectively teach and use the best problem solving and conflict
management strategies. These essential skills for young people (both
campers and counselors) are a successful set of camp skills and life
skills, too. Come hear the stories and techniques of the best approach
and ways to handle training, facilitating and role modeling these skills.
Create Rich Environments for Active Learning or REAL’s
Mike Anderson, Thursday 2:00 pm – 5:15 pm $35/person
Participants in rich, active learning environments continuously shape
and reshape the knowledge they construct through their learning
experiences. REALs are a fusion of four different and complimentary
learning technologies: cooperative learning, generative learning,
student-centered learning, and problem-based learning. Join us as we
share some truly unique problem solving activities from the UK that will
explore how to create REAL programs that bring about real results.
Super Tools: Behavior Management for Super Camps
Mike Ashcraft, Thursday 2:00 pm – 5:15 pm $35/person
Attend this seminar and discover how to create environments and
agendas that promote desirable behavior. Learn strategies for
preventing undesirable behavior. Learn techniques to use once
misbehavior has occurred: positive discipline, logical consequences,
reparations, restitution and self-esteem. Learn many tools that are
guaranteed to make guidance and building self-discipline easier and
make working with kids more enjoyable!

will help you to change your thinking, vocabulary and approach to

Evaluating Staff Using the 360 Degree Process

Want to provide more meaningful staff evaluations? Come learn how
to incorporate the 360 evaluation process into your camp where all
staff can have input into the evaluations of their fellow co-workers.
Discuss how the pros and cons of this type of evaluation system and
hear how one camp used this to successfully rejuvenate their
